During 2014 China International Paper Technology Exhibition (CIPTE) on September 3-5 in Shanghai, CIPTE Conference 2014 was held successfully on September 4 in Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center. CIPTE Conference 2014 was jointly organized by China Technical Association of Paper Industry, Paper Engineers' Association from Finland and China National Pulp and Paper Research Institute, co-organized by Shanghai Technical Association of Paper Industry, and undertaken by China Pulp and Paper Magazines Publisher. The opening ceremony was hosted by Mr. Cao Chunyu, president of China National Pulp and Paper Research Institute. Mr. Chen Xuezhong, Chairman of China Technology Association of Paper Industry, and Mrs. Pirkko Molkentin-Matilainen, CEO of Paper Engineers' Association from Finland delivered speeches respectively. About 260 conference attendees from domestic and abroad colleges & universities, research institutes, paper enterprises attended the conference.

　　"CIPTE Conference is the platform for paper technologist to exchange and understand the achievements and development trend of international paper industry, and has become the most influential and most popular academic event of China's paper industry." Mr. Chen Xuezhong pointed out in his speech, "Nowadays, the production and consumption of paper and board in China have ranked No. 1 of the world. At the same time, China's paper industry is restricted by resource, energy and environment, and needs to change the development ways and accelerate the structure adjustment. In CIPTE Conference 2014, we invite domestic and abroad experts to deliver technical presentations on current hot topics of pulp and paper industry. The purpose is to help paper technologist to know more about the up-to-date techniques and developing trend, and promote the enterprises to increase the products' quality, reduce the energy consumption and emission."

　　Mrs. Pirkko Molkentin-Matilainen said: "It is great honor for Paper Engineers' Association to organize CIPTE Conference 2014 with China Technical Association of Paper Industry and China National Pulp and Paper Research Institute together. Today, paper industry has been facing huge challenges, such as exploring new energy resource, utilizing new techniques and raw materials. We will respond to these challenges by enhancing cooperation and resource sharing. We are proud to have the opportunity to introduce advanced techniques in CIPTE Conference 2014. 　　The conference was conducted by Mr. Jin Fuming and Mr. Zhan Huaiyu, executive member of the council of China Technical Association of Paper Industry respectively. Experts from China, Finland and Germany made brilliant speeches respectively. 

　　Mrs. Cao Pufang, advisor to China Paper Association, delivered a presentation on the topic of "the Status of China's Paper Industry in the Twelfth Five-year Plan Period". Mrs. Cao Pufang introduced the general situation of China's paper industry since the execution of <The Twelfth Five-Year Plan of China's Paper Industry Development>, analyzed the main problems in the implementation of the Plan. Mrs. Cao Pufang pointed out that, from 2011 to 2013, the raw material structure of China's paper industry improved continuously, the product structure adjusted and optimized in some degree, industry concentration increased, the level of independent development of equipment improved tremendously, the level of resource utilization efficiency increased significantly, prominent results of energy saving achieved, backward production capacity eliminated with spectacular success, all of these effectively promoted the healthy and stable development of the paper industry. While, there are some problems, such as the contradiction between raw material supply and demand, heavy task of energy saving and emission reduction, declined growth rate of profit and tax, etc. 

　　Mr. Tom Lind, project manager, Paper Projects, Pöyry Finland Oy made a speech on the topic of "Sustainability Benchmarking and Main Improvement Potential in European Pulp and Paper Industry". Mr. Tom Lind summarized a practice to benchmark sustainability of pulp & paper mills globally, and the main features of European guiding directives and their impacts on the industry. The measurement and benchmarking sustainability, BAT BREF and pulp & paper industry efficiency improvement potential were also introduced.

　　Mr. Harri Kiiskinen, principal scientist, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, pointed out in his topic of "Possible Breakthrough Technologies for European Pulp and Paper Industry", European pulp & paper sector is undergoing one of the most dramatic transitions in its history, and more "out of the box" type of innovation and thinking, new added value products and novel uses of pulp fibers are needed. Meanwhile, breakthrough technologies in foam forming, fiber yarn using fiber to replace cotton, nanocellulose based material solutions, and biorefinery technologies were introduced.

　　Mr. Juhani Lehtonen, managing director, GloCell Oy of Finland, made a speech on the topic of "Furnish Optimization—The Key to Raw Material and Energy Savings in Paper and Board Manufacturing". Mr. Juhani Lehtonen highlighted the mathematics of the furnish optimization, and the fiber morphology contributions to pulp and paper quality. He concluded that modern furnish optimization could create operational improvement raw material and energy saving unmet by investments in the machinery.

　　Mr. Zhang Hui, professor, doctor, Dean of College of Light Industry Science and Engineering, Nanjing Forestry University, delivered a presentation on "A Review of Recent Development of Domestic Pulping and Papermaking Equipment". Mr. Zhang Hui introduced the development of capacity, output and equipment of China's paper industry in recent years, and technical progress of the domestic equipment in pulping and papermaking process. 

　　Mr. Matti Lares, senior technology manager, Valmet Oyj of Finland made a speech on "Today's Methods and Technologies for Making Top-Quality Coated Boards". Mr. Matti Lares introduced some state of the art technologies and methods in refining, flowing, calendaring, coating, and drying sections of coated board production. These technologies and methods included new type refiner with a new kind of feeding system, aqua layer headbox, metal belt calendar, muti-layer curtain coating method and air drying technique.
Mr. Jari Hiltunen, business development manager, ANDRITZ Oy of Finland, delivered a presentation on the topic of "Replacing Fossil Fuels in Lime Kiln with Biomass Gasifìcation or with Dust Firing". Mr. Jari Hiltunen stated that gasification or wood power firing are very competitive solutions to replace fossil fuel in the lime kiln, in which wood power firing is favourable to low ash biofuels, and gasification can use low ash content biomass as well as bark. These technologies were installed in two mills and after long periods of operations in Finland and Sweden, and the mills have not experienced any disruptive effects on their lime kiln operation.

　　Mr. Thomas Schaible, Voith Paper Co., Ltd., made a speech on the topic of "Advanced Technology in Recent Start-ups". Mr. Thomas Schaible pointed out that, with the increasing demand in economy, paper enterprises need to face more challenges to adapt to the changes and requirements from the market. These challenges are related to the highest production capacities, highest paper or board quality, low specific investment cost as well as operating cost and minimum environmental footprint. 

　　In the discussion section of the conference, attendees and speakers discussed some questions related to the new technologies, new equipments and development prospect of China's paper industry presented in the speeches. The conference attendees said, the topics of CIPTE Conference 2014 were hot topics of current paper industry, and would promote the further development of paper industry. CIPTE Conference 2014 was successful. CIPTE Conference 2015 will be held during 2015 China International Paper Technology Exhibition on September 16-18 in Beijing.
